As my fiancé and I stepped into Kauboi Izakaya, a wave of nostalgia hit us, instantly transporting us back to our memorable trip to Japan. This cozy hole-in-the-wall in midtown Reno felt like a secret haven, a place where we could reconnect with the vibrant flavors and welcoming atmosphere we had so deeply fallen in love with during our travels. Each dish on the menu was a reminder of those evenings spent in bustling izakayas, where every bite was an adventure that brought us closer together.
Our discovery of Kauboi Izakaya felt like fate, a serendipitous connection that tied our past experiences in Japan to our present in Reno. Just days before our memorable trip, I visited my wonderful hairdresser, Hannah, who infused our conversation with excitement and shared stories of her own love for Japan. Her enthusiasm was contagious, and as she crafted my “travel hair,” I couldn’t help but feel as if she was setting the stage for our own journey. With each snip and style, I was filled with anticipation, and little did I know, our bond over Japan would lead us to this hidden gem.
When Hannah recommended Kauboi Izakaya, I could tell it held a special place in her heart. Her passion for Japanese cuisine mirrored our own, and I felt an immediate connection to the restaurant even before we arrived. It was more than just a place to eat; it was a portal back to the streets of Kyoto, filled with the vibrant flavors and cozy ambiance we had cherished during our travels. This incredible establishment, brimming with character, promised an experience unlike anything else in Reno. I could already envision the enchanting dishes awaiting us, each one a chapter in our culinary adventure.

As we settled in and explored the menu, the complex flavors and textures captivated us, drawing us deeper into our shared memories of Japan. After ordering our drinks to start us off, we ordered our first plate- the Cucumber Salad. A refreshing beginning, each crisp slice of cucumber is coated in a tangy miso dressing, which creates a pleasing blend of flavors. A touch of sesame adds a subtle nutty depth, while a hint of heat introduces a gentle warmth that invites you to take another bite. This salad is not merely an appetizer; it’s a refreshing palate cleanser that sets the stage for the culinary symphony to follow.

Next, we ventured on to the Pork Gyoza. Bite into this delicious option, and you'll first experience a pleasant sweetness that quickly transitions into a rich, savory flavor. The initial taste is comforting, followed by salty notes complemented by a subtle hint of spice. Underneath the dumplings lies a ginger sauce that adds a zesty kick, perfectly balancing the flavors. Don’t skip the slice of refreshing apple; it provides a bright contrast that enhances the overall dish and makes each bite even more satisfying!

Up next, my fiancé's favorite bite of the night- the Tokyo Fried Chicken! This dish is a crunchy, tender wonder that delivers impressive flavor in every bite. The initial crunch gives way to the unmistakable kick of spicy mayo that awakens your taste buds. It’s no surprise that Shane calls it the best fried chicken he’s had in a while—this dish showcases a wonderful balance of texture and taste! Each piece combines the heat of the mayo with the juicy, succulent meat, making it a satisfying comfort food that you’ll want to enjoy again and again.

Immediately following Shane's favorite dish came my own personal favorite (though it was a tough battle between this and the cucumber salad) the Charred Broccoli! Prepare to fall in love with broccoli like never before, as Kauboi Izakaya’s charred broccoli takes center stage with its bold flavors. The char adds a delightful smokiness, while the bright green florets deliver a satisfying crunch, all harmonized with a mild sesame sauce that drapes over the dish like a cozy blanket. A sprinkle of fried scallions introduces a hint of sweetness and an exciting crunch that elevates this humble vegetable to new heights. This dish proves that even the greenest of ingredients can shine brightly when treated with care and creativity.

Winding down our meal we enjoyed the Battleship Curry + Fries. This dish is comfort with every bite, which feels like a familiar favorite. This indulgent option features a mild curry sauce that coats crunchy fried pieces, offering a satisfying flavor in every bite. The straightforward curry, paired with crispy fries, creates a pleasing contrast of textures. It’s a dish that pairs wonderfully with a cold beer, inviting you to relax and enjoy the simple pleasures with each satisfying bite.

The last dish of the night was the Spicy Soba Noodles, a dish that pays homage to the beloved character Todoroki from My Hero Academia, one of our favorite anime series! The cold noodles, served with a punch of flavor and a fiery kick, proves that spice can be enjoyable for everyone. Each strand of soba celebrates bold tastes, while creamy avocado and crisp green onions provide a refreshing contrast that helps balance the heat. This dish is a reminder that even the most laid-back noodles can deliver a powerful punch, making it a must-try for both fans of the show and spice lovers.

Looking ahead, I can’t help but imagine meeting up with Hannah for a double date at Kauboi Izakaya, creating a full-circle moment that would celebrate our journeys and shared love for this cuisine. We would reminisce about our trips, swapping stories over plates filled with deliciousness, laughter echoing through the cozy space. Love you, Han! I knew this restaurant would be a special connection for us—a place where memories are cherished, flavors are celebrated, and new stories are waiting to be written.
